- Float, switch and check valve first
- Tethered, vertical and electronic switches each fail in their own way, and a check valve that no longer seats sends the entire vertical discharge column back down the pipe on every shutdown. Both are proven before a pump is condemned, because both produce the same picture: a full pit and a motor that looks dead.
- Follow the discharge to daylight
- The line is traced from the check valve to wherever it terminates and confirmed to be flowing. A 1.5-inch discharge is not interchangeable with a 2-inch one, and buried outlets, crushed sections, silted ends and lines landscaped over after the fact are common here — all of them produce a pump running against a closed pipe.
- Size the replacement to the pit and the lift
- Selection comes from measured inflow and from vertical lift plus friction to the discharge point, not from the horsepower stamped on the old unit. Basin diameter and depth — an 18-inch liner behaves differently from a 24-inch one — determine switch travel and how many times an hour the motor is allowed to start.
- Backup, alarm and the circuit that feeds them

Why does my sump pump run constantly?
Two very different causes hide behind the same symptom. Either the inflow genuinely is that high — a high water table after sustained rain, a broken irrigation line nearby, or a failed check valve returning the same water to the pit on every cycle — or the switch is stuck closed and the pump is running in an empty basin. The second is the expensive one, because a pump with nothing to move overheats instead of pumping. Timing the cycle and watching whether the discharge column falls back separates the two in a few minutes.
The pump hums but no water moves. Is the motor gone?
Not necessarily. A hum under load with no flow usually means the impeller is jammed, the volute is packed with silt or gravel, or the discharge is blocked downstream so the pump is working against a closed pipe. A seized motor sounds different and normally trips the breaker instead. The order of checking is the discharge line first, then the impeller, then the motor — replacing the whole pump when the outlet was buried under sod solves nothing and hides the fault for another season.
Do I need a battery backup?
If the pit protects something that matters — an elevator shaft, a finished space, equipment — then a single pump on grid power is a system with one known failure mode and no warning attached to it. A secondary pump on a deep-cycle battery covers an outage. A water-powered backup covers it without a battery but draws on the potable supply, so it depends on available pressure and on the backflow protection that arrangement requires. How often should a sump pump be tested?
Before every wet season at minimum, and again after any long dry spell, because a pump that has not moved in months can seize and its switch can stick in place. Can I replace a sump pump myself?
The plumbing side of a like-for-like swap is within reach of a competent homeowner. What is the difference between a sump pump and a sewage ejector?
A sump pump moves clear groundwater and seepage. A sewage ejector moves fixture waste from a bathroom or laundry sitting below the gravity drain line, which means solids, a sealed and vented basin, and a pump built to pass them. They can look similar in a catalog and they are not interchangeable. Putting a sump pump into an ejector basin blocks it within weeks; putting an unsealed lid on an ejector basin puts sewer gas straight into the room it serves.
Why is there water in my elevator pit?

The name for it is short cycling, and in a pit it has three usual sources: a check valve that is not holding, so the water standing in the vertical discharge falls straight back and re-triggers the float; a float set with too little travel for the depth of the basin; or a basin far too small for the inflow reaching it. Ten starts a minute is not a duty cycle any pit pump is built for, which is why the motor ends up the casualty rather than the cause. It is a valve and float fault far more often than a pump fault.
